Whatsapp launches new disappearing messages option


Whatsapp launches a new disappearing messages option. Whatsapp will be releasing a new disappearing messages feature this month. This latest feature by the company will enable the users of Whatsapp to turn on disappearing messages on chat conversations between friends.

To delete messages automatically after a week, which is seven days. Anybody can allow the option in personal chats. Also, group admins will be fit to setup disappearing messages in group chats.


Unlike the self-destruct timer of Telegram that enables its users to pick the disappearing time varying from 1 second to minutes to a week, Whatsapp will still be active for one week before it now finally disappear, that is if users enable the feature.

Whatsapp statement in a blog post

Here is what the company mentioned in a blog post. The company said:

“Our goal is to make conversations on Whatsapp feel as close to in-person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stick around forever. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the option to use disappearing messages on Whatsapp”.


It further added:

“We’re starting with seven days because we think it offers peace of mind that conversations aren’t permanent while remaining practical so you don’t forget what you were chatting about’.

Whatsapp mentioned that the new feature will be launching to users worldwide soon this month. It also said that the period of 7 days will still stay across markets. A spokesperson of Whatsapp mentioned that the company is “listening to user feedback as always and will continue to for this feature”.

The person said this in a reply to the query of the ET on the time-frame of seven days and if that will be altered after the first launch.

The company also mentioned that in a person to person chat, either of the two can turn on or turn off disappearing messages. Also, admins will have control over this feature in groups.

The company recreated the storage management tool

Whatsapp said that it has recreated the storage management tool for users to indicate easily, review. And also bulk deletes content that may be occupying their phones. The company is now sending close to 100 billion messages a day, Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive officer of Facebook mentioned last week in the quarterly earnings call. While in India, its largest market, Whatsapp has more than 400 million users.

Disappearing messages on Whatsapp


Disappearing messages will as well delete photos and videos after seven days. While the message will delete for both parties, it is still very possible to screenshot. Or just copy the messages before they get deleted automatically.
