Microsoft announces its Surface Laptop 4 with choice of Intel or AMD processors

Microsoft today is working on its Surface lineup with the Surface Laptop 4. Surface Laptop 4 now gives you the choice of either the Intel or AMD processors across both the 13.5 inch and the 15-inch models.

Surface Laptop 4

The two sizes will ship with the latest 11th Gen processors or AMD’s Ryzen 4000 series processors of Intel.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4

Microsoft is set to ship its Surface Laptop 4 on the 15th of April, 2021 in the United States, Japan, and Canada as well.

The difference in the pricing might be the fact that Microsoft is not making use of the latest 5000 series CPUs of AMD here. Instead, it is making use of the AMD’s Zen 2-based chips for its AMD Ryzen Surface Edition processors.

Even with that, the performance between the AMD and Intel versions could be similar. However, we will still have to chill for the full reviews of the laptop to now see how the choices of Microsoft have landed.

The processor improvements enable Microsoft to promise up to 70% more performance over the previous Surface Laptop 4 as well as some battery life gains.

Battery Life

Microsoft promises us up to 19 hours of battery on the 13.5 inch AMD model. While on the 15-inch version, it promises up to 16.5 hours of battery life.

The two of the Intel versions will ship also with the largest Iris Xe graphics of Intel. And that practically means that games like Overwatch can be played but at 1080p ultra.

Surface Laptop 4 Design

Talking about the design, the new Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 still maintains the same design as that of the Surface Laptop 3 that shipped years back.

Also, you will be able to choose between the classic platinum Surface style and a new ice blue color on the 13.5-inch models. Both of them are Alcantara fabric.

Still, for the 13.5-inch model, Sandstone and Matte black are available also in metal options.

Whereas, the 15-inch version has no Alcantara fabric. It only has strictly platinum and matte black in metal.

Connectivity

Though, Microsoft hasn’t really said much about the rest features of its Surface Laptop 4. But we assume it has one USB-C port, a headphone jack, one USB-A port as well as Microsoft’s Surface Connect port for charging.

It still does not have any support for Thunderbolt. Also, the M.2 NVMe SSD can still be removed from a slot at the rear of the device.

The Surface Laptop 4 lineup is kind of complicated this time because of the choice between Intel or AMD.

Storage

The 13.5-inch base model of the Surface Laptop 4 which is priced at $999 is the AMD Ryzen 5 4680U, having 8GB of RAM and 512GB of Storage.

Finally, for the 15 inches model, there are more AMD options starting with the $1,299 AMD Ryzen 7 4980U model having 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
