How to Configure Internet Explorer to Use a Proxy Server

You use servers to connect to the Internet. You will have a main server that you use all the time, such as MSN or your local cable or telephone company. In most cases you will never need to change this server connection. However, if you ever need to temporarily connect to the Internet through another source, the temporary server is known as a proxy. Reasons for needing to connect to the Internet via a proxy server are many and varied. If you should ever need to do this, you must configure Internet Explorer to use a proxy server.

Set Yourself up to use a Proxy Server

  •  Open Internet Explorer from your computer’s start menu. If it isn’t already installed, visit the Microsoft Web site to download the latest version (see Resources below).
  • Go to the ‘Tools’ tab and click it.
  • Choose ‘Internet Options’ from the list provided.
  • Select the ‘Connections’ tab.
  • Hit the ‘Settings’ button and then choose what type of proxy connection you want to configure. There will be 3 choices. Place a mark in the circle beside the option that best suits your needs.
  • Click ‘OK’ when you are finished. Your proxy connection is now configured.
