Asphalt 8 Airborne

Asphalt 8 Airborne is a 2013 racing video game, developed and published by Gameloft as part of the Asphalt series.Between the Hot Wheels physics, licensed cars, online play, and gorgeous presentation, Asphalt 8 is worth a lot more than its $1 asking price. Whether or not it’s worth all the in-app purchases that the player is constantly inundated with is another question, but in the game’s defense, none of them are necessary to get all the cars and upgrades. If you’re wondering whether to buy Asphalt 8, the answer is yes, so long as you’ve got some high-end hardware to play it on.

The title of the game is a pointer to the biggest change compared to its predecessor. Asphalt 8: Airborne rewards for tricks you perform while you are in the air, like doing Barrel Rolls or Flat Spin jumps. You can do Barrel Rolls by driving onto one of the many angled ramps present on the track, letting a mix of gravity and momentum do the rest. In most cases you can trust that you’ll land safely, unless you really messed up the approach. Flat Spin jumps are a bit tricker to perfect, as they require you go off a ramp while drifting (braking the car at high speed while steering it), and to success or failure depends on the angle of your approach.

Asphalt 8 Airborne gameplay

Each event in a season is associated with a city. So you can be driving across the desert in Nevada in one event, and find yourself speeding through the streets of Tokyo in another. You’ll go through tunnels, avoid oncoming traffic, and even discover a shortcut or two along the way.

Asphalt 8 Airborne controls

It’s quite easy to start playing Asphalt 8: Airborne, but surprisingly difficult to actually win a race, especially with the crummy car you start with. You can upgrade your car by making an in-app purchase, or by working your way up by winning races. However, you’re given no less than four control options, two with tilt steering and two with manual.

However, the default controls for Asphalt 8 Airborne feature tilt to steer, auto-acceleration, with taps on the left and right edge of the screen to brake (drift) and nitro-boost respectively. You can of course change the controls to get tap-to-steer and manual acceleration, if that’s what you prefer.

Asphalt 8 Airborne modes

You can play Asphalt 8 Airborne in various modes including World Series (Multiplayer over the Internet), a local Wi-Fi race, a quick Solo race, infected & elimination, or the Career mode. But if the selection is limited, the variety isn’t: you’ll drive through everything from a relatively earthbound Monaco to an avalanche-prone Alps to a live space shuttle launch in French Guiana. (Huh?) Get a jump wrong and you might smash into a space shuttle as it’s landing or bounce off the London Eye.

Multiplayer mode

Asphalt 8’s multiplayer was built on basic principles. You won’t find a plethora of options to run through. You race against seven drivers through random match-ups. The excellent multiplayer racing makes up for the manipulative single-player mode, and some of the car packs are not totally unreasonable, opening up new seasons and races for a few extra bucks.

Asphalt 8 Airborne career and classic modes

The first, and most generally picked mode, is Classic. Here, you compete in a two-lap race. The second mode is Elimination. In this mode, you race continuously, as the driver in last place gets eliminated. Eventually, it’ll come down to two players, and the one in the lead wins.

Furthermore, Airborne is the eighth of 9 seasons in Asphalt 8 Airborne, and the last regular season of the game’s Career mode. There are 210 stars (126 podium finish + 84 Bonus Stars) available through 42 races.

Additionaly, Airborne is the hardest regular season in the game, as it involves the most powerful and often, most expensive vehicles of each class. There are bonus star objectives that are very difficult, including a Drift Distance as high as 8500 yd! As of the San Diego Harbor update, this season requires a Premium vehicle to complete (if the player hasn’t completed this season already).
